Company transparency and employer branding

Jessica Williams on company transparency and employer branding, Coinbase doing more interesting things, and WFH (work-from-home) is shifting more than just company morale on this week’s ATS Digest.

As the VP of people at a company that tripled in size between now and the same time last year, Jessica sheds light on employer branding tactics for small businesses, as well as the line between transparency and what we now call “Radical transparency”.

Employee salaries, promotion nomination forms, and performance management information. None of these are kept private at Refine Labs.  Jessica says the enthusiasm for salary transparency often varies by company and by experience level. Across the board, however, entry level employees are more open to the idea of pay transparency than their more senior counterparts.

While Refine Labs’ company culture has a foundation of openness and honesty, we discussed how transparency can potentially be taken too far in the case of Coinbase’s peer-to-peer interaction rating system.  While this does put the power in the hands of the people, Jessica shared her concerns with the impact this could have on diversity and inclusion initiatives, more quiet, introverted employees, and the culture as a whole as people take to campaigning in their internal slack channels for the next promotion.
