Every four years, as a presidential election rolls around, business leaders start asking: How will this impact the economy? Will hiring pick up after the election? Should we expect a staffing boom?

I had the opportunity to sit down with Barry Asin, co-author of Breaking Through: Leadership Disciplines from Top Performing Staffing Firms, and a frequent speaker at staffing-industry events. He shared his thoughts on whether election years really drive growth—or if that’s just a common misconception.

Does the Staffing Industry Always See a Post-Election Boost?

Historically, many staffing firms have expected hiring demand to rise after an election, fueled by greater economic certainty and policy clarity. But Barry believes the reality is more complicated.

“Every cycle is different,” Barry said. “I’ve been looking at the industry for more than 20 years, and where we’ve been the last few years is really unusual. We haven’t lived through a pandemic before, and that has left a lasting impact.”

While some post-election hiring rebounds have occurred in the past, Barry emphasized that 2025 is shaping up differently due to lingering economic effects from the pandemic, inflation concerns, and industry-specific slowdowns.

What Makes 2025 Different?

Slower Growth but More Stability – SIA forecasts a 5% increase in temp staffing, which is a positive shift but not a major spike.

Uncertainty Leading Up to the Election – Hiring demand often dips before an election as businesses wait to see what happens. Barry noted, “The run-up to the election was an overhang on the industry. Now that it’s behind us, businesses can start moving forward again.”

Policy Changes Still in Play – New policies on tariffs, labor laws, and healthcare regulations could impact hiring in certain industries.

What Staffing Firms Should Focus on Post-Election

Even though a massive hiring surge isn’t guaranteed, staffing firms can still capitalize on new opportunities by staying ahead of market trends.

Watch for “green shoots” – Some industries are already showing signs of recovery, like healthcare and IT staffing.

Advise your clients – Businesses will be adjusting to new policies, and staffing firms that act as trusted advisors will stand out.

Keep an eye on regulatory shifts – Changes in wage laws, employment classifications, and tax policies could affect the industry.
