Colare Secures $2.5M to Fix the Costly Bottleneck in Hardtech Engineering Hiring

SAN FRANCISCO — In critical industries like aerospace, defense, and advanced manufacturing, hiring a single engineer can consume upwards of 40 hours of valuable senior engineering time. Today, San Francisco-based startup Colare emerged from stealth with a $2.5 million pre-seed funding round to tackle this growing problem with the first simulation-based technical screening platform tailored specifically for hardware disciplines.

The round was backed by Afore Capital, Garage Capital, and Acadian Ventures.

The Problem: When a Bad Hire Risks Mission Failure

While software engineering has long relied on automated coding assessments and standardized evaluations, hardware recruitment has remained stuck in an era of manual screens, take-home portfolios, and exhaustive onsite interviews. Evaluating physical engineering skills—such as CAD modeling, PCB design, thermal analysis, and finite element analysis (FEA)—historically required watching someone work in real time.

That reliance on senior staff comes at a steep price:

  • Severe Time Drain: Experienced engineers routinely halt product development to sit through multiple interview rounds, often finding basic capability gaps only in final stages.
  • Workforce Pressures: Aerospace manufacturing faces a 15% attrition rate—double that of other sectors—while roughly 29% of the aerospace and defense workforce is 55 or older, leading to a retirement wave just as hiring ramps up.
  • The AI Signal Problem: The rapid rise of AI-assisted resumes and interview answers has made paper credentials less reliable, leaving hiring teams with fewer trustworthy signals before an interview is scheduled.

“Hardware companies are building some of the most technically ambitious products in the world, and they are still evaluating engineers with proxies for whether someone can actually do the job,” said Esther Thomas, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Colare. “In hardware, one wrong hire could mean a failed launch, a delayed mission, or a lost contract.”

Realistic Simulations Over Paper Credentials

Founded by Thomas and former Ford electrical engineer Nain Abdi, Colare maps a company’s job descriptions to practical, simulation-based engineering assessments. Candidates solve real-world problems using the standard software and tooling they would touch on the job.

Instead of searching for a single correct formula, the platform evaluates the engineering trade-offs candidates make across cost, manufacturability, physical constraints, and reliability. It then generates a structured debrief for hiring managers, filtering out unvetted talent before senior team members commit interview hours.

“Hardware engineering is not about memorizing an equation—it’s how you take that knowledge and apply it to the constraints of building in the physical world,” said Abdi.

Early Traction Across Aerospace and Startups

Colare is already deploying its platform across organizations ranging from early-stage startups to multi-billion-dollar aerospace manufacturers, with roughly half of its current client base operating in defense and space sectors.

For early-stage companies lacking in-house technical vetting—such as chemical manufacturing startup Rhoic—Colare serves as an outsourced technical evaluation layer. At larger enterprise clients, the platform has already intervened to catch foundational engineering gaps in candidates who had passed initial recruiter screens and were headed to executive interviews.

With aerospace and defense funding hitting $35.6 billion in the first half of 2026, Colare intends to use its fresh capital to expand its simulation library, support faster customer onboarding, and establish hands-on ability—rather than resume pedigree—as the industry standard for hardware hiring.
