This blog was inspired by Investing in Women‘s Liz Willetts session at our recent Job Boards Connect conference, where she discussed making a success of her start-up and how being more than just a job board has been part of that success. 

Once upon a time, job boards and applicant tracking systems (ATSs) lived in distinctly separate worlds. Job boards helped candidates find jobs. ATSs helped employers manage applicants. Simple enough. But fast forward to 2025, and the lines are blurring. Fast.

We’re now seeing job boards roll out features that look a lot like applicant tracking systems, while ATS providers are building job distribution networks, candidate databases, and even marketplace-style products that look suspiciously job board-ish. So, what’s going on, and what does it mean for employers, job seekers, and the future of recruitment?

Job Boards: More Than Just a Place to Post
Modern job boards aren’t just digital classifieds anymore. They’re offering:

Candidate screening toolsEmployer dashboards with analyticsWorkflow automation like interview scheduling and messagingAI-powered matching instead of keyword-based sorting

These features are edging into ATS territory.

Why the shift? Employers want fewer systems, not more. If a job board can bring in talent and help
