Commit Raises $6 Million for Canadian Software Engineer Community

Commit announces its emergence from private-beta with an oversubscribed funding round to future-proof the careers of Canada’s best Startup Engineers. This first-of-its-kind professional network is designed to support developers who are passionate about building early-stage software, but who have been constrained by geography.

The platform uniquely provides peer-to-peer support and career development resources, and erases the friction between talent and opportunity by hiring engineers and then matching them with world-changing startups, regardless of location.

The global pandemic accelerated the trend towards remote-first careers, and the inevitability that top software companies will be fully decentralized in the next 3-5 years is now assured. Recent data shows that 49% of millennials and Gen Z– the majority of the workforce–would rather quit than return to the office full-time. Software Engineers are well positioned to be the default remote profession, and Commit is at the forefront of this transition.

They are building the most beloved community for developers to learn and celebrate their craft, and build connections with others, without needing to relocate. The company was founded in 2019 by Beier Cai (CTO) who wrote the first line of code at Hootsuite, and Greg Gunn (CEO) who built businesses sold to eBay and launched Hootsuite’s go-to-market strategy.

“Now is the time to decouple opportunity from geography,” said Greg Gunn, CEO of Commit. “This last year has proven that developers don’t need to go back to the office. Both Beier and I know all too well how hard it is to build a tech career outside of Silicon Valley. The opportunities have been biased towards those who can afford to relocate. We started Commit to help the world’s best engineers start and accelerate remote-first careers. By eliminating the constraints of co-location, we dramatically increase access for the majority of software developers who are located outside of tech hubs. Not only is this the right thing to do, it will exponentially increase the rate of innovation in the world.”

The launch is fueled by an over-subscribed $6M seed round which was uniquely preempted by Commit’s own customers–the majority of whom are Canadian technical founders. The company already boasts a roster of 50+ high-profile startups that want to work with Commit Engineers. The funds will be used to 10x the number of Engineers on the platform in the next 12 months, and continue to build and invest in the programs that reach and support the best talent in this space.
