SAN FRANCISCO — Sparrow, an AI-driven HR technology provider specializing in employee leave management, announced it has raised $35 million in a Series B funding round.

The financing round was led by SLW, bringing Sparrow’s total funding to $64 million. Existing backer WndrCo—which led the startup’s previous funding round—also supported the company’s growth trajectory.

Expanding Beyond Leave Management

Sparrow plans to use the new capital to scale its core leave management platform and expand into adjacent areas of labor law compliance. To support this growth, the San Francisco–based company is actively hiring across engineering, product, operations, sales, and marketing teams.

Managing employee leave involves navigating shifting local regulations, wage replacement laws, insurance policies, and payroll adjustments—creating significant administrative burdens for Human Resources departments. Sparrow’s platform combines automated compliance processing with personalized support to streamline leave workflows across the United States and Canada.

“Leave is complicated and stressful,” said Deborah Hanus, CEO and co-founder of Sparrow. “It touches so many aspects of the company—legal compliance, insurance, state agencies, payroll, HRBPs, managers, and employees. Everything is always changing, and no one has the data they need when they need it. Sparrow has centralized that data to truly make leave—and adjacent areas of legal compliance—stress-free.”

Industry Demand and Customer Impact

Employee leave remains a top operational challenge for organizations navigating increasingly distributed and hybrid workforces.

According to Andy Biladeau, Chief Transformation Officer at the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), leave management consistently ranks as a leading inquiry among the organization’s 325,000+ members, who collectively generate more than 60,000 HR support calls annually.

Sparrow currently serves over 1,000 companies, including high-profile clients such as OpenAI, Reddit, Eightfold AI, Oura, and Chime.

Investors highlighted the strategic importance of Sparrow’s AI-backed compliance approach within the broader Human Capital Management (HCM) software market.

“Sparrow is addressing one of the most complex and underserved areas of HR by utilizing AI to automate the manual, error-prone tasks that companies and employees encounter today,” said Matt Walsh, Managing Director at SLW. “By combining deep compliance expertise with intelligent automation, Sparrow is transforming a significant pain point into a streamlined, employee-centric experience.”
