Researchers Say AI is Ready to Start Learning on its Own

AI’s champions regularly predict the obsolescence of people, even if they can’t detail how technology will morph from machine to sentience. Now there’s talk of a “new era”, meaning another step on the way to artificial general intelligence.

“Artificial general intelligence” describes AI that can do pretty much anything a person can. Depending on who you ask, the technology is imminent (Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei believes it’s possible around 2027) or some years away (a survey of AI researchers by professors Vincent Müller & Nick Bostrom concluded there’s a 50% chance we’ll see AGI by 2040, and a 90% chance by 2075).
