PALO ALTO, Calif.— Upwork has launched Upwork Now, a new on-demand hiring feature designed to match clients with skilled freelancers available to start work immediately.Released in public beta, the tool aims to compress traditional recruitment timelines from days into minutes, directly addressing the fast-paced demands of AI-accelerated workflows.

The launch follows internal research highlighting shifting client expectations: an April 2026 Upwork survey of 150 U.S.-based clients found that 57% preferred hiring in a day or less.Upwork Now attempts to close that gap by pairing active project requirements with talent who are already online and ready to begin.

Key Capabilities and Workflow

  • For Clients:Employers posting jobs on Upwork can toggle a new “Hire Now” setting to alert qualified talent currently active on the platform. A live feed delivers proposals alongside a real-time candidate shortlist to accelerate vetting. The functionality is slated to expand to general talent searches in a future update.
  • For Freelancers:Talent can set a “Work Now” status on their profile or homepage, signaling instant availability. This status surfaces jobs from clients actively looking to hire on the spot.
  • Native AI Tool Integration:Building upon Upwork’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) server introduced earlier this year, clients can trigger Upwork Now without leaving compatible third-party AI interfaces.Connected AI tools can evaluate work in progress and source qualified human talent autonomously. In coming weeks, freelancers will also be able to toggle their availability directly from supported AI environments.

Early Testing Metrics

During pilot runs conducted between October 7 and October 26, 2026, Upwork reported significant reductions in hiring friction:
