In the early days of my military service, I was assigned to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, for an intensive program of study. After I graduated, I was reassigned to Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas, to learn the art and science of cryptography.

I was anxious to see the Southwestern U.S., so I opted to make the 1,500-mile drive between duty stations. It was a particularly balmy day in Central California, so I drove off wearing shorts and flip flops. After driving through the night, I had made it as far as Albuquerque, New Mexico.

I soon found myself caught in a surprise blizzard that sent me rummaging for more suitable attire.

Weather conditions can change in a hurry. This is also true in our work relationships. Reflecting on my sunny day-turned-to-snow inspired me to create this worksheet. Choose an important relationship you have with your manager, a peer, or a direct report. How is the weather? Use the worksheet to identify what’s working (or not) and what might come next.
